Stereoscopic (3D) content provides the biggest step change in audience experience since the change from black and white to colour. Unlike the change from standard definition to high definition, 3D brings with it new opportunities, new challenges and some new creative story telling tools.

3D is being driven from many different interested sectors. Cinema is the obvious one, with 3D films providing significantly higher box-office returns than 2D. The music industry will also benefit from “live” performances being captured in 3D and distributed to large screen venues for mass, live-like experiences. The arts and sporting events are also using 3D to provide “the best seats in the house” views to multiple remote locations. Not to be left out, TV broadcasters are beginning to launch 3D services, with 3D capable domestic screens being available from 2010.

Each of these content areas bring advertising and sponsorship opportunities.

As an early adopter of 3D in February 2008, I have experience in consulting upon and executing the post production of stereoscopic projects. I can bore anyone senseless about the joys of convergence, interocular distance and negative / positive parallax etc.

3D production and post production is easy. Good 3D production and post production is not. It is easy to create stereo projects that do not make the most of the stereo ability, leave the audience with headaches or generally provide an unpleasant viewing experience. It is also easy to massively underestimate what is required to complete a project successfully and efficiently. If you have a project that you feel should be taking advantage of the 3D revolution, please contact me. I can provide advice about the production and workflow of the project, or provide a more hands-on service for post production.
